How CoolSculpting CoolAdvantage Works
The idea for CoolSculpting treatment came from two Harvard University scientists that noticed that children got dimples from eating popsicles. Based on this observation, the scientists realized that cold temperatures could target and kill fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue. They coined the phenomenon of targeted cooling “Cryolipolysis,” and it became the basis for CoolSculpting treatment.
CoolSculpting is FDA-approved for the reduction of unwanted fat. CoolAdvantage applicators are the latest controlled cooling technology developed. This advancement shortens the treatment time to 35 minutes, allows a bigger treatment area and provides more patient comfort during the treatment. The treatment crystallizes (freezes) fat cells in a specific area of the body. In the weeks following treatment, the body naturally processes and eliminates these cells. Once the cells are gone, they will not return. Clinical studies have shown an average of 20 to 30 percent fat loss per treated area.*
Coolsculpting versus Smartlipo, which one is better for you?
Both Coolsculpting and Smartlipo are great treatments. They offer a way for us to get rid of extra inches of fat that diet and exercise can’t.
Smartlipo uses laser energy to melt the fat and tighten the skin. Fat is then taken out of patient’s body using minimally invasive liposuction technique. The result could be very effective right away, although healing does take a few months for complete and perfect results after Smartlipo. The procedure produces little down time, about 2 to 3 days off from work and up to 2 weeks of wearing a compression garment and avoiding vigorous activities. Incisions are small and in most cases they almost disappear after a few months.
Coolsculpting is a noninvasive treatment to eliminate unwanted fat cells. It is an amazing technology developed to provide controlled freezing to the fat cells. As a result, the body will process frozen fat cells and eliminate them from the body. Coolsculpting can be done to contour abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, bra bulges, and arms. Each time one will expect a reduction of 25% of fat cells in treated area; and 40 to 50% of fat cells if treatment areas overlap. Recently Coolsculpting technology has been applied to reduce fat under one’s chin. By doing 2 cycles of Coolsculpting in this area, most patients noticed great reduction of their double chin. Coolsculpting is an ideal treatment for patients who don’t want surgical procedures or any downtime. It can be repeated to contour the body and to sculpt the body to its best. With CoolAdvantage, the Coolsculpting treatment allows patients the quickest way to get rid of fat. However Coolsculpting might not be the treatment if patient is concerned about a lot of loose skin to begin with, or a particular area or a volume of fat that is not ideal for Coolsculpting to work. In those cases, Smartlipo is most likely a good choice for those patients.

What to Expect During Treatment
Prior to treatment, you and Dr. Kong will identify the area(s) of your body to be treated. During treatment, you will relax on the treatment table as Dr. Kong positions the CoolSculpting CoolAdvantage hand piece over the area of unwanted fat. The CoolAdvantage hand piece will draw up the bulge of fat between two panels that cool the fat cells under the skin. Once the fat cells reach a certain temperature, they crystallize and die. The whole treatment cycle is only 35 minutes long. Dr. Kong will repeat this process several times to target all of the unwanted fat in the treatment area(s). By having two CoolSculpting machines working simultaneously, Dr. Kong can customize the treatment plan while freezing twice as much fat in half the time.
Recovering from CoolSculpting CoolAdvantage
Because treatment is completely non-invasive — and does not involve needles, incisions, injections or anesthesia — it does not require a lengthy recovery period. You can immediately return to your daily routine right after treatment. The treated area may have mild swelling, redness, tingling or numbness, but these side effects are temporary and will quickly subside. With the new CoolAdvantage treatment, patients notice much less chances of bruising.
CoolSculpting Results
Results may appear in as little as three weeks as your body flushes out the crystallized fat cells. The most noticeable results should appear around the two-month mark, continuing to improve for up to four to six months. The treated area will look slimmer and flatter, with a better contour. How long does CoolSculpting treatment take?
It can vary depending on the size and number of treatment areas, but generally CoolSculpting treatment takes between one and three hours. Does CoolSculpting treatment hurt?
Every patient has a different tolerance for pain and responds to treatment differently, but most find that CoolSculpting treatment does not hurt. You might feel bursts of intense cold, especially at the beginning of your treatment, and a slight pinching/pulling sensation, but it should not be painful. CoolAdvantage treatment is more comfortable than the traditional Coolsculpting treatment.
Can I read during my CoolSculpting treatment session?
Yes, you can read, answer emails, listen to music, watch TV or simply relax during your CoolSculpting treatment session. Some patients even nap as Dr. Kong works.
When can I go back to work?
You can plan to go back to work immediately after your CoolSculpting appointment. Most patients are able to resume their daily routine right after treatment.
Are there any side effects?
CoolSculpting may cause mild and temporary numbness, bruising, swelling, redness, tingling or stinging after treatment, but these effects subside completely. Serious side effects are very rarely reported.

How much weight will I lose with CoolSculpting?
You may lose a few pounds after treatment, but it is not guaranteed. CoolSculpting is not designed as a weight loss treatment; rather, it selectively “spot-tones” problematic areas of unwanted fat. CoolSculpting is not appropriate for individuals that are severely obese or have lots of loose skin.
