As we age, the body increasingly generates less collagen, a protein that is vital to having healthy, supple skin. Without an ample supply of collagen, the skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag. Having sagging skin on the face, chest or other area of the body often makes individuals look older than their actual age. To help combat sagging skin without the need for cosmetic surgery, Dr. Sheena Kong offers Thermage and Ultherapy skin-tightening treatments. Keep reading to learn more about these innovative, noninvasive skin-tightening procedures.
Thermage
With Thermage treatment, Dr. Kong applies a device to the skin in the treatment area that first provides a cooling effect to the skin, so the patient is comfortable during treatment. Then, the Thermage device delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy deep into the tissue layers underneath the skin’s surface. The RF energy heats these layers, causing the collagen fibers contained in the tissue to contract, in turn providing a tightening effect on the outer skin layers. The heat from the RF energy also reactivates the cells’ latent collagen production, and skin health continues to improve as more and more collagen is produced over time.
Thermage is effective at improving the look of sagging skin on the face, eyelids, chin, neck, abdomen, buttocks, thighs and upper arms.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy is another nonsurgical skin-tightening treatment that can help patients look years younger, without facial rejuvenation surgery. The difference between Thermage and Ultherapy treatment is that Ultherapy works by delivering ultrasound energy (instead of RF energy) into the deep layers of the skin to remodel the collagen and stimulate the cells’ dormant collagen production.
Ultherapy treatment is best performed to tighten the skin of the face, neck or décolletage.
